The Lowliest Are Expendable

It’s not something we easily relate to in our culture and time. Footwashing.  Without a context, it’s even harder to explain to children. And if you have children who, like the Wicked Witch of the West, seem to view water as a weapon of mass destruction, the likelihood of them “getting it” decreases significantly.
In the culture that Christ and his disciples lived, however, footwashing was an everyday necessity. Standard footwear fashion was sandals, and infrastructure in the Roman world, while improved and improving, had resulted in still only a few roads being paved. Thus, the daily journey to the market, the fields, the workshop or the temple built up layers of dirt on the feet. Moms then, being not much different than moms now, did not want that dirt tracking into their homes, so a basin of water sat at the entrance of every home for footwashing. Now, as most households employed servants or kept slaves, obviously this demeaning and dirty job was given to the most menial of servants or slaves, particularly when guests arrived.

After a long journey to Jerusalem, the group arrived at the home where they would be taking the Passover meal together.  Jesus had recently rebuked them for obsessing about places of honor in the Kingdom. He had just been received into the city as a King by fawning mobs hoping to stir up anti-Roman, pro-coming-earthly-Jewish-kingdom-ruled-by-legendary-Messiah sentiment. We are not told whether the routine footwashing had not taken place when he and the disciples entered the home, but at some point during the meal, Jesus took up the elements and donned the garb of a servant and began washing the feet of the disciples.

Philippians 2:6-7 tells us that Jesus “did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant.” This is evidence of that nothingness that Jesus made himself to be. The experts in the law of the Old Testament had drummed phobias about the spiritual disaster that accompanied germs and everything carnal into the minds of the Jews that it was unheard of for anyone other than the lowliest to touch dirty feet. The lowliest were expendable, you see.

Matthew Henry comments upon this passage:

Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, that he might teach us to think nothing below us, wherein we may promote God’s glory, and the good of our brethren. We must address ourselves to duty, and must lay aside every thing that would hinder us in what we have to do. Christ washed his disciples’ feet, that he might signify to them the value of spiritual washing, and the cleansing of the soul from the pollutions of sin. 

Peter reacted (let’s say it together) as only Peter could. “You shall never wash my feet!” Well-intentioned Peter missed the point. I would have, too. Jesus said, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” I can just imagine the scores Peter would get on the myriad of social network quizzes out there: always swinging from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other. “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus replied, “’The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.’ For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, ‘Not all of you are clean.’” (John 13: 10)

Again, Matthew Henry:

All those, and those only, who are spiritually washed by Christ, have a part in Christ. All whom Christ owns and saves, he justifies and sanctifies. Peter more than submits; he begs to be washed by Christ. How earnest he is for the purifying grace of the Lord Jesus, and the full effect of it, even upon his hands and head! Those who truly desire to be sanctified, desire to be sanctified throughout, to have the whole man, with all its parts and powers, made pure. The true believer is thus washed when he receives Christ for his salvation. 

Peter’s words were the ones recorded for Scripture, but I imagine others protested. I wonder what Judas thought. I wonder if he said anything. We know that as the keeper of the money for the group, he was already critical of Jesus’ priorities and care for the souls of others, not approving of monies wasted on ceremonial attention to Him. On this, Matthew Henry says:

[W]hen hypocrites are discovered, it should be no surprise or cause of stumbling to us. … When we see our Master serving, we cannot but see how ill it becomes us to domineer.

The children in the catechism class this past Sunday expressed a wide range of reactions to having their “feet” washed by their revered and dear teacher Miss Chris. As she knelt with a mock up of basin, cloth and water (shoe shine kit and brush) and proceeded to wash their feet (shine their shoes), they looked perplexed and a little uncomfortable. Some giggled, “It tickles!” But as she lovingly served them, her message was clear: “Jesus is the King, but he is also the greatest servant of all. I am offering to wash your feet in a way that is similar to His offer of Himself on the cross to cleanse us of our sins.”

How easy it is to focus on ourselves! But in the shadow of the devotional posture of Jesus and how it warms our hearts, let us not forget that it was no burden for our King to take on the lowliest of tasks for us. He became the expendable so that we would be saved and made new. And as it was a task that we cannot even provide for ourselves, let us devote ourselves to Him who performed it for us, for only in Him can we be washed and cleansed of our guilt and made presentable for service to God and others.

Leaving Behind Our Little Comforts

Recently my dear friend Sarah took a courageous step of faith.

She, her husband, and their three young children packed all their belongings in ten suitcases, boarded a plane for the Middle East, and set off to start a new life ministering in a Muslim country.

Already they have faced many unknowns that would drive most of us into a tizzy — such as how they will school their kids, where they’ll be living, and how language school will work with caring for a family, among many others. But Sarah went joyfully, knowing this was God’s call on her family’s life.

A Surprising Insight from Babel

Some women in our church have been studying the book of Genesis, using The Promised One by Nancy Guthrie. Not long ago, we came across the infamous story of the Tower of Babel from Genesis 11. Although we might mainly associate this story with God’s judgment and the beginning of new languages, we found another application especially relevant to Sarah — actually, to anyone whom God is calling to transition in some way.

In Genesis 9:1, God tells Noah and his sons to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” This, in effect, was telling Noah to repopulate the earth after the Flood. “Filling the earth” was a command to spread out across the earth, so that God’s redemptive purposes could unfold in every land, to all peoples.

But when we come to Genesis 11, we see the people deliberately disobeying God’s command. Instead of spreading out in order to fill the earth, the people found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there together. They obviously enjoyed being together and wanted to live in the same place. So they decided to work together to build a city and a tower in order to make a name for themselves. The focus became what they wanted and desired instead of God’s desires for them.

Genesis 11:4 says, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” But God was not amused by the people’s scheme. In an act of both judgment and mercy, he confused their language so they could no longer understand each other. He dispersed them over the face of all the earth. So what does this have to do with us — and with Sarah and her family?

Our Love of Comfort

As human beings, and women in particular, we are drawn to comfort and security. It comes very naturally to want to be with people like us, with our families and friends. But God’s calling on our lives is not, “Go, live by your families and friends and enjoy life together.” But much like God’s command to Noah and his sons to fill the earth, Jesus says, “Go and make disciples of all nations.”

This past year, I’ve felt God impressing on me the idea that I need to hold all things he gives me with an open hand: my husband, children, friends, home, church, belongings, everything. They are not mine to keep. They are on loan to me for God’s good purposes. It has been good to question whether I am willing to give up comfort and security in order to follow God.

Sarah is an example of a woman who is leaving the comfort and security of all that is familiar — family, friends, church, language, culture, and country — in order to go to a hard place. Everything will be new, including learning a new language and ministering among a Muslim nation. I am grateful for her example of joyfully following her husband’s leadership, and being willing to do some very tough things, in order to make God’s name great.

With Open Hand and Every Need Met

So that is my question and challenge for us here. Are we holding our plans loosely? Are we willing to follow God’s call, even when it means leaving our most precious relationships, homes and culture? God doesn’t call all of us to move overseas, but are we willing to go where he calls us — a new neighborhood or school, a new vocation or ministry, a new city or state, a new culture or country?

God is worthy of our trust as he leads us on the path to make his name known, and he will prove utterly reliable. As he has shown us in the gift of his Son, he will not let any obstacle come between us and his good purposes for our lives in the midst of difficulty. As Philippians 4:19 reminds us, our God “will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” God will prove himself to be more than enough, for Sarah, and for you.

If it is important enough for me

Bible-reading

Teaching the wonder of God’s word, the intricate web of doctrinal truths and the beauty of God’s plan to your children doesn’t have to be daunting, and you don’t need a Masters of Divinity to do it effectively.

Consider the stories you love to read to your children and that they love to hear.  Our Creator God, the Master Storyteller, has fashioned history so that remarkable plotlines and compelling characters dot the landscape of our Bible.  A good Bible storybook will pick up on these elements of narrative, and the investment in one with a careful balance between narrative and prophetic truth-telling is a must for any Christian household. But, instead of reading to your children just from the storybooks, don’t neglect also reading directly from Scripture.

Ask your children if they would like to hear the story just as the Lord tells it. Then pick up the Bible – not an electronic version, but the paper and binding kind – and read the narrative again, marking in the text as you go along where you might go back and reinforce the truths that rise above the storyline.

There are many opportunities to do this with some of the most-loved stories of the Bible. Here are some suggestions:  Jonah’s trip in the belly of the big fish and the truth that is expressed in John 12:24 (question: what must die in us?); God’s cutting in two the sacrifice while Abraham was in the trance and Romans 2:29 (question: who does the cutting and why is this important?); the many references to sheep throughout the Bible and the direct correlation of sheep to the followers of Christ in John 10 (question: what makes a sheep a sheep?).

Ponder a portion from the best known Bible story of all, the account of the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary, which was our Bible story from this Sunday’s children’s lesson in our ongoing discussion of the Trinity. In it, the Triune God is revealed in the announcement to the young maid:

You have found favor with God [the Father]…. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High [the Father]. And the Lord God [the Father] will give to Him [the Son] the throne…. The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High [the Father] will overshadow you; therefore the child [the Son] will be called holy – the Son of God” (Luke 1:30-37).

Do you think it was an accident that Gabriel was so explicit in his word choice and exhaustive in his explanation of how God would be involved in this miraculous occurrence? The Triune God executed and affected this most crucial event in history so that believers would know that all of the Godhead was in agreement and took part.  And if it’s important for me to know this, it’s important for my children to hear it from an early age and to see it as an essential point of truth. As to how much of it they understand, first, that is up to the Lord’s moving mercifully and mightily in their hearts, and second, they will comprehend more and more as they grow and they hear it discussed over and over while living under my roof.

Don’t shrink back from teaching what may appear to be heavy doctrine. Look back at that passage from Luke or the others and uncover more lovely doctrines to share with your children. You may be surprised to discover what even the littlest ones can comprehend!

When your entrance into a room is ignored

and it’s a good thing!

What a beautiful and complete picture we have of the cooperation of the persons of the Trinity in Luke 4:18a.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor.”

With a plethora of pronouns, it’s easy to lose track of the roles expressed in this passage from Christ’s first public discourse after the forty days of fasting and temptation in the wilderness, as recorded by Luke. Here is a simple breakdown of the sentence:

 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Jesus.
The Father has anointed Jesus.
Jesus preaches good news to the poor.
 

 I am here today, an undeserving recipient of God’s grace and mercy, because the Good News, preached by Jesus, who was set apart by the Father and had the Spirit of the Lord resting upon Him, was extended to me, chosen by the Father before the foundation of the world, paid for in the atoning work of the Son, sealed by the Holy Spirit for eternity.  What wondrous love is this?! 

The Spirit upon Jesus enabled Him to preach good news to the poor. Our Lord today still preaches good news to those impoverished in spirit through the Holy Spirit’s abiding work in His followers.  “… The Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you” (I Peter 4:14b). wash-jesus-washing-apostles-feet-christian-art_290281018067The servant is not greater than his Master. Our Lord humbled Himself, taking the place of a servant, wetting washcloths and washing the feet of his disciples. Our Lord did this! What kind of testimony would it be to others to see the gratitude and joy of the servants demonstrated when we serve others, following in the footsteps of our Master, greater than we, functioning perfectly and purposefully under the economy of His role within the Trinity.

God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good,” says the apostle Peter in his message to Cornelius (Acts 10:38). Nineteenth-century preacher J.R. Miller exhorts us, in our Christ-following service, to do the same:

 “We should strive to perpetuate this Christ-ministry of love in this world. Hearts are breaking with sorrow, men are bowing under burdens too heavy for them. Duty is too large, the battles are too hard. It is our mission to do for these weary, overwrought, defeated, and despairing ones–what Christ Himself would do if He were standing where we stand. He wants us to represent Him; and He fills us with His Spirit, that we may be able to scatter the blessings of helpfulness and gladness all about us. Yet one of the saddest things about life is, that, with so much power to help others by kindliness of word and kindliness of act–many of us pass through the world in silence or with folded hands.”

Miller adds this, should we be blind to the spheres around us where our service is needed:

“There are a few people whom God calls to do great things for Him. The best thing most of us can do in this world, is just to live out a real, simple, consecrated, Christian life in our allotted place. Thus, in our little measure, we shall repeat the life of Christ Himself, showing men some feeble reflection of His sweet and loving face; and doing in our poor way, a few of the beautiful things He would do if He were here Himself.”

My friend, Gina, said much the same on her blog this week, “Much of what we do as parents is never seen or acknowledged. My entrance into a room will never be preceded by an announcement that tells everyone about all I’ve done or felt, how much I’ve prayed or cried, or how much I have served. It is just quietly done before the Lord.”

We are able to serve the Lord through trial and affliction, under extreme circumstances, emptying ourselves into lives of others who would disregard, reject, mock and persecute us, because the Holy Spirit, that untiring, relentless, thorough, creative, enabling Person of the Trinity, gives us His power and His strength to persevere to the end.
